What is Mental Performance Coaching ?

Many experts say that

Modern mental performance coaching is not just a set of tools. It is not simply about getting athletes relaxed and in the right frame of mind for competition. It is a theory and practice about human performance based on observation and theory of human psychology. We this we can begin to understand and create models of human behaviour both in training and competitive situations. These models are then used to develop techniques in order to help athletes reach their full potential.

In my opinion it goes much much further than this.

For me it is all the above and also primarily

A philosophy and a set of underlying beliefs about human performance.

Seeing and treating an athlete as a whole person

Guiding an athlete so that they can release themselves from thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that have in the past negatively affected their self-image, self-confidence and personal performances both inside and outside sport.

Helping athletes to understand themselves at a deeper level so that they can help themselves to achieve their goals in and out of sport with a balance and harmony with the rest of their lives

I believe in any performance there is both an inner game and an outer game being played simultaneously.
It is my aim to help athletes get an understanding, balance and harmony into these two games.

In my experience when we can do this then athletes are able to achieve and sustain optimal performances consistently and endure the stresses and strains of modern competitive sport over long periods, coupled with a balance between their sport and their private lives.
